European Weather A Game Of Two Halves

The latest precipitation map for Europe from the US Climate Prediction Centre shows a distinct "game of two halves" for the month of January.

Whilst the UK, France, Germany and most of Scandinavia in the northern half of the region had generally lower than normal precipitation during January, things were a lot different in Spain, southern Italy and most of Eastern Europe.

Here many areas received up to 200% of normal precipitation during the first month of 2010:



It certainly wasn't a split decision on the temperature front though, with almost the whole of the region seeing monthly temperatures anything up to 7 degrees C below normal:
