Hungarian Harvest Disappoints

Joachim from DLR in Germany tells me that the wheat harvest in Hungary is already 80% completed, with yields coming in between 3.0-4.5 MT/ha. Bushel weights are ranging only 65-72 kg/hl in the feed wheats, with some of the better quality milling wheats making up to 74 kg/hl.

The wet spring and early summer mean that mold and fusarium are a significant problem this year, with this grade of wheat being only suitable for the biogas plants, he adds.

Hungarian Corn Crop Down 15.5 Percent

With just over half of this season's corn crop now harvested, the Hungarian Ag Ministry see this season's crop at 7.6 MMT, 15.5% down on last season's production of 9.0 MMT.

Hungary 2008 Grain Crop Up 42%

Hungary's 2008 grain crop is now seen at 7.93mmt, up 43% on last year according to the country's Central Statistics Office.

The final wheat crop is now seen at 5.65mmt, 42% higher than last season's 4mmt, despite planted acreage being up only 1% on 2007.

Barley production was 1.48mmt, 45% higher than 2007.

Hungary '08 Grain Harvest 17.61MMT vs 9.6MMT in '07

Hungary's 2008 grain harvest is now expected to come in at 17.61MMT, an increase of over 8MMT on last season's 9.6MMT according to the Ag Ministry there.

The 2008 cereal crop has produced 8.61MMT (4.7MMT in 2007) of which winter wheat accounted for 5.62MMT (4MMT in 2007), and the corn crop is expected to yield 8MMT.

Hungary '08 wheat harvest up around 35 percent

The Hungarian wheat harvest is almost complete at 5.36 million metric tons according to the state news agency MTI. That's well above last year's 4 million-ton crop.

The ministry said the entire autumn barley crop was 842,000 tons, and the spring barley crop 471,000 tons. Last year, the autumn barley crop was 187,170 tons and the spring barley crop 142,090 tons.

Hungary? No not really!

Oh, hello, yes did you think I said yes please grow as much corn as you possibly can and I'll take the lot? You must of misheard, what I actually said was I'll take none......

Announcements about new bioethanol investments in Hungary stood bumper to bumper last year, but there is not one of them that is currently being realised. The high price of maize and environmental protection concerns about the technology to be used have made the project conditions completely uncertain.

“As far as I'm concerned, there is no bioethanol plant under construction at the moment, but I must underline that only a few of the previously announced 30-32 deals have even made it to the authorisation phase," László Zsemberi, President of the Hungarian Bioethanol Association, told business daily Napi Gazdaság on Thursday.

Zsemberi attributed the non-realisation of the majority of these projects to two key factors. One of these, he said, was the absurdly high price of maize, the base material for bioethanol production, and another the uncertainties surrounding European Union regulations on the sector.
